The serial identifies a coin — it doesn't stop cloning on its own (anyone who sees a real serial can reprint it). The optional Verification PIN is a separate secret to print under a scratch panel on the packing; verify serial + PIN and lock a serial on first check. Keep the PIN out of anything the customer sees.
